Morocco: Morocco's public channels' free fall | Morocco World News

Rabat- Feb 07, 2013

The situation has become untenable in the Moroccan public audiovisual media. The latest issue of the audience share has completely baffled executives of the El Brihi street. Indeed, in 2012 the share of audience for the first national chain did not exceed 9.6%. A score worthy of a specialized channel and not a historic generalist channel.

According to published figures, the two programs that are most watched are entertainment productions. The news program broadcasted at 8.30pm, which was until a few years ago the spearhead of the National Society of Radio-diffusion and Television (SNRT), tumbled in the third position.

?With such numbers, the SNRT is dying slowly, and don?t tell us that it is a matter of resources,? said an offended journalist of the society. It must be said that Al Maghribia, which the direction of the SNRT presented as a channel of continuous information is followed by only 3.1% of viewers. Audiences of the 8 channels of the SNRT combined would not exceed 20%, far from the solid 27.2% 2M displays.

?The management of the SNRT has failed in its mission, both qualitatively and quantitatively. It is a feeling shared by everyone, including the managing staff. It is high time a change is made to save what can still be saved ?, warns a connoisseur of the mysteries of the Moroccan audiovisual.
