US gymnast Aly Raisman's parents are the ... - Larry Brown Sports

A lot of moms get carried away watching their son or daughter in a youth soccer game for the local recreation league, so we can imagine what watching your child compete in the Olympics must be like. This is no doubt as stressful a time for the parents of athletes in London as it is for the actual competitors. Fortunately for us, some parents handle the stress in hilarious fashion.

As you can see, US gymnast Aly Raisman?s parents were a bit on edge during her gymnastics routine on Sunday. Her mother Lynn, a former gymnast, seemed to be right there with Aly for every move. Her dad Rick took a while to get going, but the landing brought him out of his seat and inspired a solid fist pump.

While they look a bit silly and may need to cool off with an ice bath like their daughter did, you can?t knock the Raismans for being nervous and enthusiastic. After all, the Olympics are once every four years.

Supervalu fires CEO Herkert, names Sales to post

(AP) ? Supervalu is ousting CEO Craig Herkert as the grocery chain looks to right its business only weeks after reporting disappointing quarterly results and suggesting it might put itself up for sale.

Chairman Wayne Sales was named Monday to take on the additional roles of president and CEO.

Supervalu had brought in Herkert, a former Wal-Mart Stores Inc. executive, in 2009 to help shake things up. The grocer subsequently put a heavier emphasis on lower prices and tried to position itself as a neighborhood store to draw new shoppers and keep customers.

Earlier this month, the Minneapolis company reported that both its first-quarter net income and revenue slid and it suspended its dividend.

Supervalu was still feeling the pressure from competitors and the company announced that it would cut prices further. The grocer also said earlier this month that it planned to trim its administrative and operational expenses over the next two years and cut its capital spending.

The company had said it and and its financial advisers will review various options. While the supermarket operator did not elaborate, this type of review traditionally includes the possibility of selling the company.

Sales, 62, has been a board member since 2006. He is the retired vice chairman of Canadian Tire Corp. and was its president and CEO from 2000 to 2006. Sales previously served in various roles at Kmart Corp.'s U.S. division.

The cost savings efforts, coupled with a focus on improving its financials and becoming more competitive, appear to be tops on Sales' agenda.

"We will take significant cost out of the business, and move with urgency in our retail food business to lower prices and create points of sustainable differentiation for our customers," Sales said in a statement.

He added that Supervalu is still reviewing its strategic options and that he will continue to lead that process.

Supervalu also named board member Philip Francis, 65, as lead director on Monday.

Sales plans to retire from his board posts at Georgia Gulf Corp. and aviation company Discovery Air Inc. so that he can concentrate on his roles at Supervalu.

Supervalu's shares fell 3 cents to $1.96 in morning trading.

The company has about 4,400 stores in the U.S.

Microsoft Surface to arrive on Oct. 26, says SEC filing

4 hrs.

If you happened to peruse?the annual report Microsoft filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) this week, you may notice that a rather obvious little bit of news was?confirmed?in the documents: That the Redmond-based company's?Surface tablets will hit shelves on Oct. 26, along with Windows 8.

The detail is mentioned quite casually in the report:

The next version of our operating system, Windows 8, will be generally available on October?26, 2012. At that time, we will begin selling the Surface, a series of Microsoft-designed and manufactured hardware devices.

CNET's Brooke Crothers was among the first to call attention to the line in the SEC report.?As he points out, the time frame has been suggested before, though not confirmed to the exact day. And what's frustrating is, it's still not confirmed.?

We called up Microsoft's PR folks to get the confirmation directly, but when we heard back, all the spokesperson would say is that the original statement about the Surface still stands:

When Microsoft announced the device last month in L.A., they indicated that "Surface for Windows RT will release with the general availability of Windows 8, and the Windows 8 Pro model will be available about 90 days later."

Why confirm it in investment documentation, but not confirm it directly to reporters? Regardless,?whether it hits on Oct. 26 or just after, we're looking forward to testing it out. ?

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Scientists Uncover Gene Variation Linked to Melanoma

SUNDAY, July 29 (HealthDay News) -- New gene mutations associated with the development of melanoma have been identified by scientists who conducted what is believed to be the largest DNA-sequencing study of the deadly disease to date.

Melanoma accounts for the vast majority of skin cancer deaths. The main cause of melanoma is excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.

The Yale Cancer Center team used DNA-sequencing technologies to analyze 147 melanomas originating on both sun-exposed and sun-shielded sites on patients' bodies. They found a large number of UV-induced mutations in sun-exposed melanomas, but most of these are "passenger" mutations that don't have a functional role in melanoma.

"We devised a mathematical model to sort out the relevant DNA alterations from over 25,000 total mutations," lead study author Michael Krauthammer, an associate professor of pathology, said in a Yale news release.

The researchers pinpointed a mutation in the RAC1 gene that speeds growth and movement in normal skin pigment cells, which are where melanoma begins. The mutation likely occurs at an early stage of melanoma development and promotes cancer cell growth and spread to other sites in the body, they said.

The RAC1 mutation was found in about 9 percent of melanomas from sun-exposed skin. It is the third-most frequent mutation after previously identified BRAF and NRAS mutations. Because the RAC1 mutation is so common, it would be worthwhile to develop treatments that target it, the researchers added.

They also identified mutations that disable proteins that suppress tumors.

The study was published online July 29 in the journal Nature Genetics.

In the United States, about 76,000 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed this year and about 9,000 people will die of the disease, according to the American Cancer Society.

Communication is key to success | standout tall and be counted

In any relationship be it business or intimate communication is very cardinal to making the relationship a success. You will agree with me that many relationships especially intimate ones break up mostly due to a luck of communication. I am not sure of the statistics but I am very certain that most relationships lack proper and good communication. Many a times our messages are?misinterpreted?or?misunderstood. I have been in situations where I had to apologise because my message was miss understood either because of the words I used or maybe the tone of my voice.

I must?admit?that I do admire people who do know how to put across what they want. In my years of trying to improve my life I have learned to use simple and straight forward words when communicating and especially when it comes to giving instructions. If you are an ardent follower or regular reader of this blog you will agree with me that you there are no jaw breaking words. I try as much as possible to use everyday words that are straight forward. I also want to believe that most of these world conflicts are due to a lack of proper communication. In a work or business environment it is very important to have a precise and clear cut communication strategy to avoid conflicts.

If you are in leadership the following tips may help you pass on what ever it is you want achieved.

As a leader you need to decide what the desired outcome should be. Have a vision and ensure that you put yourself in the shoes of your?subordinates when giving instructions. You may need to repeat and structure your words in simple everyday language for all your?subordinates?to understand.

Sometimes it helps to explain what your vision is to a smaller group or better still on individual basis to your desired target group. Some people may not be free to ask as many questions as needed when in a large group. If you are to succeed at anything your desired outcome should be understood and taken seriously.

When setting the stage for discussing what is currently happening it is always a good idea to start the conversation with your goals and?expectations. It is very important that each and very member of your group know what is expected of them and the overall goals to be achieved by them. Again I would emphasis on a one to one briefing as this tends to bring out even the most?pertinent issues.

I have learned that one to one discussions ?are more fruitful than group ones. Most of us are not very comfortable with large group discussions. There is a?tendency of feeling?intimidated there by?inhibiting good communication. As a leader you should also take time to know the strengths and weaknesses of your group at an individual level

The next important tip is to explain what is and is not currently happening. This will help send a message to the group about what you think is currently obtaining on the ground. If your communication levels are at the right pace your group will let you know exactly what is on the ground if they feel you are misinformed.

You as the leader should spell out in detail what you think is happening and not happening. Remember the backstops at you. Your ?responsibility is to provide?guidance??and this can only be achieved by proper and good communication.

The next and final tip is what I call the input. You can have all the brilliant ideas in the world but without the final act of implementation nothing can be achieved. After all the hard work and brain storming. A proper, concise and clear communication strategy has to be implored.

As a leader it is very important that you devise a simple and clear communication strategy outlining what input is expected from each and every member of your team. ?This way all the members will have a clear understanding and deliver accordingly.

Conclusion

Communication is perhaps the key to success. There are many more tips and methods that can be used for effective communication than the above. The ones mentioned here are ones that I frequently use and have been of help to me this far. I always encourage my readers to research more and to always ?standout tall and be counted?.

UN Fails to Reach Consensus on Arms Trade Treaty | Morocco ...

Bu April Warren

Morocco World News

United Nations, New York, July 28, 2012

Despite four weeks of negotiations at United Nations headquarter in New York City, members of the international community have failed to reach enough of a consensus for an international Arms Trade Treaty.

?Our conference has been a sporting event,? said Argentinean Ambassador Roberto Garcia Moritan, the conference chairman.? ?We have to compete in the shortest amount of time possible, a series of fixed hurdles, some perhaps a bit too high.?

If adopted, the treaty would have set a common standard to regulate the international trade in conventional arms.

Despite a month-long July negotiation, delegations from 192 states did not receive the first draft of the final treaty until four days before the end of the conference.? This allowed for countries that were wary of a treaty from the start to stall negotiations on the basis that they needed more time.

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called the conclusion of the conference ?disappointing.?

?A strong treaty would rid the world of the appalling human cost of the poorly regulated international arms trade, Ban said.? ?It would also enhance the ability of the United Nations to cope with the proliferation of arms.?

A push for the treaty first started in 2006 as a result of the combined efforts Argentina, Australia, Costa Rica, Japan, Kenya, Finland and the United Kingdom.

The current text puts forth state-implemented rules that would regulate and control international transfers of conventional arms and would call on states to set, establish and implement a national export control system.? The treaty would apply to battle tanks, armored combat vehicles, combat aircraft, large-caliber artillery systems, attack helicopters, warships, missiles and missile launchers and small arms and light weapons.? Another area of the treaty also seeks to address ammunition.

This week many delegations voiced concerns over different aspects of the text, which the chairman tried to address by breaking the conference into small groups, but on Friday no breakthroughs were made.

Friday morning New Zealand voiced concerns with loopholes that existed in the scope section of the text, China voiced concerns with language that allowed for the European Union to join as regional integration organizations to assist the implementation of the treaty and Syria criticized the text for being unbalanced.

The Russian delegation voiced concerns about a lack of barriers or obstacles for deadly weapons falling into the hands of terrorists and armed criminals.

But perhaps the biggest surprise of the day came from United States.? The host country had stated its hope for passing a consensus text, but in the final hours raised several concerns, which the delegations described as ?issues, which are of substance but not a huge controversy.?? This put the American delegation ? which some say faltered because the country is facing an election year ? in the company of Syria, Russia and DPRK among other nations that called for more time before agreeing on a consensus text.

?President Obama should have?but did not?provided the leadership necessary to close the deal on the arms trade treaty and help reduce human suffering caused?irresponsible international arms transfers and arms brokering,? said Daryl G. Kimball, Executive Director of the Washington-based Arms Control Association.

A report of the treaty negotiations will now be delivered to the General Assembly, which delivered the conference?s mandate, and countries will decide how to proceed.

?I think this is a time for people to sit down, think about it and make sure the next steps are the logical steps,? said Roberto Dondisch the head treaty negotiator for Mexico.? ?I think it?s a little bit early to say today what are the next steps but I can be sure that Mexico will take the next steps.? We want a strong Arms Trade Treaty.?

Mexico released a statement along with 90 other countries including the European Union and many African states to remain committed to secure an Arms Trade Treaty as soon as possible.

Israel eyes austerity after prosperous year

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has long boasted how Israel has avoided the fiscal fate of Spain and Greece, is poised to unveil tough austerity measures likely to hit the underprivileged.

The measures will aim to make up part of the budget deficit that has climbed to 4.0 percent of Israel's GDP -- twice that which was expected for 2012.

Taxes on cigarettes and beer have already been hiked this week, and according to media reports the government will also be raising VAT from 16 to 17 percent and introducing a 2.0 percent income tax rise in households with an annual income of at least a million shekels ($245,000, 199,300 euros).

Also expected is a combined 700-million-shekel ($171 million, 140 million euro) cut from the budgets of all ministries with the exception of defence, education and welfare.

A spokesman for Netanyahu told public radio on Thursday that the projected measures would raise the annual tax burden of each Israeli household by 1,740 shekels ($426/347 euros).

But these could only be the beginning, with Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz preparing an additional series of tax rises for 2013.

"There are no free lunches," Netanyahu said this week in an attempt to justify the austerity plan.

The government, he said, had to increase its income to fund free childcare from the age of three, to build a security fence along its southern border with Egypt to stop illegal immigrants, and to acquire "new weapons and defence systems to cope with new threats."

And earlier this week, he also suggested the defence budget could rise even further because of regional developments, notably in Syria.

Beyond the increased expenditure, tax revenues have dropped because of slow economic growth, which is 3.1 percent so far this year compared with 4.8 percent in 2011.

"Those who say that we can spend lavishly... endanger the state of Israel and could easily lead it to the brink of bankruptcy, as is the case of leading European economies," Netanyahu said.

Israeli officials also fear that the major international rating agencies, which had hitherto provided Israel with a clean bill of health, will lower their ratings.

Until now, the Jewish state had effectively escaped the sub prime crisis of 2008 and the beginning of the current crisis in the eurozone.

"To ensure stability, we must take unpopular measures," said Harel Locker, director general of Netanyahu's office.

The bitter pill the government is about to prescribe has been harshly criticised as unjust by the opposition, by the Histadrut trade union confederation and by leaders of the social protest movement which emerged in summer 2011 over the rising cost of living.

And even within the coalition, several religious and ultra-nationalist parties denounced the "anti-social" character of Netanyahu's plan for 2013, an election year.

It is the planned increase in Value Added Tax (VAT), which will affect all Israelis, that has come in for the harshest criticism.

Oded Shahar, an economic commentator for Israeli public television, called it "daylight robbery."

And Sever Plocker of the top-selling daily Yediot Aharonot said the hike was not the fault of "the European crisis" but was because of "the blindness" of the Israeli government.

One of the main critiques levelled at Netanyahu is his intention to give a huge "gift" to multinationals by halving the taxes on monies earned in Israel and which are transferred abroad, from 25 percent to 12 percent.

The Treasury justified the move, saying it would encourage the firms to repatriate their profits rather than having them "sleep" in Israeli banks -- which brings nothing to the taxman.

In a defensive statement on Thursday, Netanyahu said that "even after the steps we will take, families in Israel -- middle-class and underprivileged -- will remain with more money in their pockets" thanks to measures such as free education from the age of three, tax benefits for working families and free dental care for children.

And central bank chief Stanley Fischer was quoted as saying that Netanyahu's planned measures were "very serious progress" which displayed "very responsible leadership by the economic decision-makers."

Glasgow Rangers move to fourth tier approved

Associated Press Sports

updated 6:39 p.m. ET July 27, 2012

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) - Glasgow Rangers will begin next season in the fourth tier, Scotland's lowest professional league, after the move was approved by the country's soccer authorities on Friday.

The Scottish Football League announced that agreement had been reached following weeks of discussions to allow a reformed Rangers conditional membership in the Scottish Football Association.

Rangers, Scottish champion a record 54 times, were put in bankruptcy protection because of tax debts exceeding $30 million. The team is now set to visit grounds with seats for just a few hundred fans next season.

Americans Carlos Bocanegra, Maurice Edu and Alejandro Bedoya are on Rangers but may leave.

NeurogesX Partner Astellas Enrolls First Patient in EU Clinical Trial ...

Head-to-Head Study Will Compare Qutenza and Pregabalin in the Treatment of Peripheral Neuropathic Pain

ELEVATE Study First to Compare Efficacy, Tolerability and Impact on Quality of Life Versus Pregabalin

SAN MATEO, Calif., July 24, 2012 (MESHPRESS) ? NeurogesX, Inc. (OTCQB:NGSX) (OTCBB:NGSX), a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on developing and commercializing a portfolio of novel non-opioid, pain management therapies, announced today that its partner Astellas Pharma Europe Ltd., the European headquarters of Tokyo-based Astellas Pharma Inc., has enrolled the first patient in its ELEVATE clinical trial in the European Union (EU). This trial is the first study to compare Qutenza? (8% capsaicin patch) to pregabalin as a treatment for peripheral neuropathic pain. Pregabalin is an oral therapy widely used as first-line treatment for peripheral neuropathic pain.[i] Under its Commercial License Agreement with Astellas, NeurogesX shares in the growing market opportunity for Qutenza in the Astellas territory, which includes the EU, the Middle East and Africa, through ongoing royalties, as well as potential sales milestones. In the United States, Qutenza is approved for the management of neuropathic pain associated with post herpetic neuralgia (PHN).

The earliest results of the ELEVATE study, which will evaluate the efficacy and safety of the Qutenza topical patch against pregabalin, are expected in 2014.

Conventional therapies for peripheral neuropathic pain have been limited by negative factors such as systemic side effects, drug-drug interactions, slow onset of action, the need for titration and multiple daily dosing.[ii],[iii],[iv]?The Qutenza patch is designed to act locally on the affected area and has not been associated with the systemic side effects such as sedation and dizziness that may be experienced with other treatments.[ii],[iii],[v]?The ELEVATE study is designed to evaluate which therapy better balances pain relief with tolerability and the ability to return to daily activities.

Associate Professor Maija Haanp??, a Consultant in Pain Management at the Helsinki University Central Hospital, Finland and the lead investigator in the ELEVATE study, commented, ?It is important to perform head-to-head comparative studies, such as this one, in the field of neuropathic pain.?The ELEVATE study may also provide information about the symptom profiles that are most likely to respond to the different treatments since the NPSI* questionnaire, given during the trial, will be used to assess the characteristics of pain and other sensory symptoms.?

The study aims to enroll 526 patients from approximately 100 centers in 23 countries across eastern and western Europe, including the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Romania and Bulgaria.[i]

Qutenza uses a synthetic form of capsaicin, the substance found in chili peppers which gives them their ?heat,? to change the way pain-sensing nerves work in the treated area.[vi]?The efficacy and safety of Qutenza have already been investigated in a comprehensive clinical trial program involving 1,327 patients who received at least one application.[v] Pain relief following application of the 8% capsaicin patch can take up to two weeks to take full effect and can be maintained for up to twelve weeks following a single application.[v] Qutenza has caused significant pain reduction when used alone or in combination with other treatments for pain.[v]

The most commonly reported side effects for Qutenza are transient and self-limiting application site reactions, such as pain and erythema that tend to be mild to moderate in intensity.[v]

While the number of patients who suffer from neuropathic pain is not known, estimates typically range from 1 to 2% of the [global] population, while some sources estimate prevalence to be as high as 8%.[vii],[viii]? Peripheral neuropathic pain is a complex and difficult to treat disorder that can have a detrimental effect on a patient?s quality of life.[ix],[x]? Studies suggest that, at present, only one third of patients receiving treatment for neuropathic pain achieve adequate pain relief.[xi] ?Peripheral neuropathic pain is caused by lesion or disease to the peripheral somatosensory nervous system.?The somatosensory system is a diverse sensory system composed of the receptors and processing centers to provide information about touch or pressure, temperature, body position and pain.?The nerve damage that can lead to peripheral neuropathic pain can happen as a result of a range of different diseases, medications or traumatic injuries.

*The Neuropathic Pain Symptom Inventory (NPSI) is self-questionnaire specifically designed to evaluate the different symptoms of neuropathic pain.

About the ELEVATE study

ELEVATE is an open-label study that is planned to enroll 526 adult subjects with moderate-to-severe peripheral neuropathic pain (baseline diagnosis of post-herpetic neuralgia, peripheral nerve injury, or non-diabetic painful peripheral polyneuropathy).[i] Patients in the trial will randomly receive either a single application of up to four 8% capsaicin patches or daily administration of an optimal dose of oral pregabalin (up-titration from 75 mg/day to 150?600 mg/day) for 8 weeks.?Patients enrolled into the study will be either naive to treatment with 8% capsaicin patch, pregabalin and gabapentin or will not have previously received an adequate trial or treatment with pregabalin or gabapentin.?The study will include the following key endpoints: [i]

  • The level of pain relief, as measured by the proportion of subjects in each arm who achieve at least a 30% decrease in the ?average pain for the past 24 hours? Numeric Pain Rating Scale score from baseline to Week 8.
  • The overall therapeutic effect; assessed using a composite endpoint which includes pain relief, adverse events and treatment discontinuation.

About Qutenza

Qutenza? (capsaicin) 8% patch is approved by the European Medicines Agency for the treatment of peripheral neuropathic pain in non-diabetic adults either alone or in combination with other medicinal products for pain. [v] The 8% capsaicin patch is available in 21 countries across Europe as of the end of 2011. Phase 3 clinical studies in painful diabetic neuropathy (PDN) and long-term safety studies are ongoing. Qutenza is approved by the?U.S. Food and Drug Administration?(FDA) for the management of neuropathic pain associated with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN).

The patch delivers a high-dose of a synthetic form of capsaicin directly to the damaged pain sensing nerves in the skin that are the source of neuropathic pain.?Applied to the area of pain, the high concentration of capsaicin contained in the treatment is released into the skin where it overstimulates the pain sensing nerves.?Overstimulating the pain sensing nerves makes them become ?defunctionalized,? effectively reducing their spontaneous activity and making them unresponsive to stimuli that normally cause pain for patients with peripheral neuropathic pain.[xii]

Lone gunmen always a law enforcement challenge

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The lone gunman keeps law enforcement officers across the country awake at night.

He's hard to pick out of a crowd. He has no criminal record. Often, he hasn't told anyone about his plans. He's compiled a weapons cache legally. He doesn't show up on any law enforcement radar until after he's acted.

The government has been more successful stopping al-Qaida from pulling off another Sept. 11-type attack than it has in preventing deadly shooting sprees such as the one in the movie theater in Aurora, Colo.

Law enforcement officials say it's nearly impossible to stop someone like James Holmes, the intelligent 24-year-old who, officials believe, killed 12 people and injured dozens of others.

The threat of the lone offender has become such a concern that the FBI in 2009 created a more than 25-member task force to identify common behavioral traits and characteristics. In 2012 alone, there have been 22 mass shootings, according to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.

To stop al-Qaida, the government attacked terrorist hideouts, froze major sources of terrorists' funding and made it more difficult for them to acquire weapons and materials to build bombs.

Holmes does not appear to be part of any terrorist or criminal network; officials say his purchases were legitimate and raised no red flags. "There will be no easy or quick answers and maybe there will never be any answers," Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates told CBS' "Face the Nation," adding that all the evidence gathered so far indicates "he wasn't particularly aided by anyone else."

Until Friday, Holmes did nothing to bring him to the attention of law enforcement.

"There's no way you can prevent it. There's absolutely no way," said Peter Ahearn, a former FBI agent. "It was random. It happened. There was nothing that could have prevented that unless someone saw him loading his car with guns."

The Homeland Security Department runs a nationwide "If You See Something, Say Something" campaign. Ads encouraging people to report suspicious activity are displayed around the country, including in some movie theaters, the department said.

So far, law enforcement has not determined a motive for the attack, and no one has come forward to say they saw Holmes doing something suspicious. People have described him as clean-cut, studious and quiet. A man who had a drink with him just days before his deadly rampage said Holmes had a backpack and geeky glasses.

When Holmes launched his attack he was dressed in black, outfitted in a gas mask, ballistic helmet, vest and leggings, black tactical gloves and protectors on his throat and groin. He was armed with an assault-style rifle, a shotgun and Glock handgun.

Holmes broke no laws when he purchased his weapons, and he passed the required background checks.

Previously enacted legal restrictions on guns might have made it more difficult for Holmes to buy certain weapons and kill so many people, but he still would have been able to purchase a gun.

In 1994, Congress approved a 10-year ban on 19 types of military-style assault weapons. This ban would have prevented Holmes from purchasing one of the four firearms police found on him and in his car ? the assault rifle. The ban also would have prevented Holmes from buying new high capacity ammunition magazines so that he could fire off more shots before without having to reload.

But that law expired in 2004, and it's been more than a decade since gun control advocates had a realistic hope of getting the type of legislation they seek, despite predictions that each shocking outburst of violence would lead to action.

There is a law that restricts the purchase of body armor, but that's only if the purchaser is a violent felon. It's enforced through an honor system, as no background checks are required, said Dan Vice, senior attorney for the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

Holmes also "booby-trapped" his apartment with trip wires and explosive devices set up to kill, police said. He appeared to use three types of explosives ? jars filled with accelerants, chemicals that would explode when mixed together and more than 30 "improvised grenades," according to a law enforcement official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, citing the ongoing investigation. It's unclear whether those materials were legally purchased or whether they were of such high quantities that purchasing them could have set off a red flag for an observant store clerk.

Many lone gunmen and lone wolf terrorists are intelligent and have normal cognitive functions, such as the ability to remember things, pay attention and concentrate, said Kathleen Puckett, a former FBI behavioral expert. Puckett did a study in 2001 for the FBI that examined lone offenders, terrorists and shooters. "Basically there was no common denominator outwardly that you could see," she said.

This leaves any hope of stopping someone like Holmes to the average person to say something if he sees something suspicious, said Christopher Voss, a former FBI agent and hostage negotiator. It's on the government to reassure people that they're not being paranoid, or overreacting, when they see something that doesn't seem right, he said.

"That's really the only defense against lone gunmen ? for someone to have said something when they wrote off their observations and instincts," Voss said.

In an intelligence bulletin, the FBI and Homeland Security Department reminded law enforcement about indicators of suspicious activity at entertainment venues such as movie theaters. Among those are significant changes to appearances from one visit to the next, missing hands or fingers, strange odors or bright stains on clothes, clothing that's not appropriate for the season, an unusual interest in security procedures and loitering without an explanation.

When people first saw Holmes in the theater, he was a silhouette, taken by some in the audience for a stunt that was part of one of the summer's most highly anticipated films.

But then, authorities said, he threw gas canisters that filled the packed the theater with smoke and opened fire as people screamed and dove for cover.

"This does keep you up at night," Ahearn said. "There's nothing you can do to predict that type of crime."

Bomb squads disarm traps at suspect's home

AURORA, Colo. (AP) ? Authorities on Saturday began disarming trip wires and explosive devices "set up to kill" inside the apartment of the suspect in the deadly Colorado movie theater shooting, hoping to find clues to his motive without destroying key evidence in a blast.

Federal authorities detonated one small explosive and disarmed another inside James Holmes' suburban Denver apartment with a device that emits a shock wave and water, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press. The official spoke on condition of anonymity, citing the ongoing investigation into the shooting rampage that killed 12 people and wounded 58.

Holmes' apartment appears to have three types of explosives ? jars filled with accelerants, chemicals that would explode when mixed together and more than 30 "improvised grenades," the official said.

Makeshift memorials sprang up for the victims, including a 6-year-old girl, an aspiring sportscaster and a man celebrating his 27th birthday, after police grimly went door to door with a list of those killed in the worst mass shooting in recent U.S. history. Holmes, 24, was arrested early Friday outside the Aurora theater after witnesses say he unleashed gunfire and gas canisters on a crowd of moviegoers watching the midnight showing of the new Batman film, "The Dark Knight Rises."

The devices in Holmes' booby-trapped apartment were "set up to kill that person and that could have been a police officer executing a search warrant," Aurora police Sgt. Cassidee Carlson said. Police planned an intricate procedure to disarm the possible weapons without destroying evidence that could be in the apartment.

"We don't want to lose evidential value," Carlson said.

Federal officials said in a bulletin obtained by The Associated Press that they still hadn't determined a motive for the suspect as families grieved and others waited at hospitals, where seven of the wounded remained in critical condition on Saturday.

In his Saturday radio address, President Barack Obama urged Americans to pray "for the victims of this terrible tragedy, for the people who knew them and loved them, for those who are still struggling to recover."

Details of the dead began to emerge Saturday, including the shootings' youngest victim, 6-year-old Veronica Moser. Veronica had gone to the movies with her mother, who was drifting in and out of consciousness in a hospital intensive care unit, bullets lodged in her throat and abdomen.

"Nobody can tell her about it," Annie Dalton said of her aunt, Ashley Moser. "She is in critical condition, but all she's asking about is her daughter."

Veronica had just started swimming lessons on Tuesday, Dalton said.

"She was excited about life as she should be. She's a 6-year-old girl," her great aunt said.

Another victim, 27-year-old Matt McQuinn, was killed after diving in front of his girlfriend and her older brother to shield them from the gunfire, said his family's attorney, Rob Scott of Dayton, Ohio.

Alex Sullivan had planned a weekend of fun, to ring in his 27th birthday with friends at the special midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" and then celebrate his first wedding anniversary on Sunday.

Late Friday, Sullivan's family confirmed that police told them he was among those killed.

"He was a very, very good young man," said Sullivan's uncle, Joe Loewenguth. "He always had a smile, always made you laugh. He had a little bit of comic in him."

Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said Holmes used a military-style semi-automatic rifle, a shotgun and a pistol to open fire on the unsuspecting theater-goers. He had bought the weapons at local gun stores within the last two months. He also recently purchased 6,000 rounds of ammunition over the Internet, the chief said.

The suspect's stellar academic record, apparent shy demeanor and lack of a criminal background made the attack even more difficult to fathom.

It also wasn't known why the suspect chose a movie theater to stage the assault, or whether he intended some twisted, symbolic link to the film's violent scenes.

The Batman movie, the last in the trilogy starring Christian Bale, opened worldwide Friday with midnight showings in the U.S. The plot has the villain Bane facing Bale's Caped Crusader with a nuclear weapon that could destroy all of fictional Gotham.

The Dark Knight Rises" earned $30.6 million in Friday morning midnight screenings, and, according to industry estimates, roughly $75-77 million on the day. That put it on track for a weekend total of around $165 million, which would be the second highest opening weekend ever, following "The Avengers."

Warner Bros. has announced it would forgo the usual revenue reports until Monday out of respect for the victims. Sony, Disney and Universal also said they would delay reporting box office receipts until Monday, a day later than the routine Sunday releases for Hollywood.

Holmes had his hair painted red and "he said he was the Joker, obviously the enemy of Batman," New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said on Friday. Oates would not confirm that information, although he said he had spoken to Kelly.

Near the entrance to the theater's parking lot, a makeshift memorial of 12 candles sat in a row alongside piles of flowers. Up the hill from the theater, about 20 pastors led a vigil for 350 people, some hugging and crying. A sign read, "7/20. Gone Not Forgotten."

A federal law enforcement official said Holmes bought a ticket to the movie, went into the theater as part of the crowd and propped open an exit door as the movie was playing. The suspect then donned protective ballistic gear and opened fire, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the investigation.

Authorities said Holmes shot scores of people, picking off victims who tried to flee. At least one person was struck in an adjacent theater by gunfire that went through the wall. Adding to the terror and chaos were two gas canisters thrown by the suspect that filled the theater with smoke.

Tanner Coon, a 17-year-old Aurora resident who was watching the film with two friends, said he first thought the gunshots were firecrackers. When he realized what was happening, he ducked between seats and waited for the shooter to bark demands.

When the firing ended, Coon said he started running up the row but slipped in blood and fell on a woman who was lying on the ground. He tried shaking her, he said, but she didn't respond, so he left her behind and ran from the theater.

The shooting was the worst in the U.S. since the Nov. 5, 2009, attack at Fort Hood, Texas. An Army psychiatrist was charged with killing 13 soldiers and civilians and wounding more than two dozen others. It was the deadliest in Colorado since the 1999 attack at Columbine High School, where two students killed 12 classmates and a teacher and wounded 26 others before killing themselves.

Holmes had enrolled last year in a neuroscience Ph.D. program at the University of Colorado-Denver, though he left last month for unknown reasons. In academic achievement, "he was at the top of the top," recalled Timothy P. White, chancellor at the University of California, Riverside, where Holmes earned his undergraduate degree before attending the Denver school.

Those who knew Holmes described him as a shy, intelligent person raised in California by parents who were active in their well-to-do suburban San Diego neighborhood. Holmes played soccer at Westview High School and ran cross-country before going to college.

Colorado suspect was brilliant science student

DENVER (AP) ? James Eagen Holmes came from a well-tended San Diego enclave of two-story homes with red-tiled roofs, where neighbors recall him as a clean-cut, studious young man of sparing words.

Tall and dark-haired, he stared clear-eyed at the camera in a 2004 high school yearbook snapshot, wearing a white junior varsity soccer uniform ? No. 16. The son of a nurse, Arlene, and a software company manager, Robert, James Holmes was a brilliant science scholar in college.

The biggest mystery surrounding the 24-year-old doctoral student was why he would have pulled on a gas mask and shot dozens of people early Friday in a suburban Denver movie theater, as police allege.

In the age of widespread social media, no trace of Holmes could be found on Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, Twitter or anywhere on the Web. Either he never engaged or he scrubbed his trail.

A longtime neighbor in San Diego, where Holmes grew up, remembers only a "shy guy ... a loner" from a churchgoing family. In addition to playing soccer at Westview High School, he ran cross country.

The bookish demeanor concealed an unspooling life. Holmes struggled to find work after graduating with highest honors in spring 2010 with a neuroscience degree from the University of California, Riverside, said the neighbor, retired electrical engineer Tom Mai.

Holmes enrolled last year in a neuroscience Ph.D. program at the University of Colorado-Denver but was in the process of withdrawing, said school officials, who didn't provide a reason. The school later said in a statement that he left the program in June 2012.

As part of the advanced program in Denver, a James Holmes had been listed as making a presentation in May about Micro DNA Biomarkers in a class named "Biological Basis of Psychiatric and Neurological Disorders."

In academic achievement, "he was at the top of the top," recalled Riverside Chancellor Timothy P. White.

Holmes concentrated his study on "how we all behave," White added. "It's ironic and sad."

From a distance, Holmes' life appears unblemished, a young man with unlimited potential. There are no indications he had problems with police.

Somehow, the acclaimed student and quiet neighbor reached a point where he painted his hair red, called himself "The Joker," the green-haired villain from the Batman movies, according to New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, who said he had been briefed on the matter.

Authorities say Holmes arrived at the theater dressed in black, outfitted in a gas mask, ballistic helmet, vest and leggings, black tactical gloves and protectors on his throat and groin. He was armed with an assault-style rifle, a shotgun and Glock handgun.

Police said he started his attack by tossing at least gas canisters into the theater, where he had bought a ticket for the midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises," the new Batman movie.

A federal law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing probe into the rampage, said Holmes bought four guns from retailers in the last two months.

Holmes bought his first Glock pistol in Aurora, Colo., on May 22. Six days later, he picked up a Remington shotgun in Denver. About two weeks later, he bought a .223 caliber Smith & Wesson rifle in Thornton, Colo., and then a second Glock in Denver on July 6 ? 13 days before the shooting, the official said.

A high-volume drum magazine was attached to the rifle, an assault weapon, the official said. Police Chief Dan Oates said that a 100-round drum magazine for the rifle was recovered from the scene.

"I'm told by experts that with that drum magazine, he could have gotten off 50 to 60 rounds, even if it was semiautomatic, within one minute," Oates said at a news conference. "And as far as we know, it was a pretty rapid pace of fire in that theater."

Julie Adams, whose son played junior varsity soccer with Holmes, said her son remembered little about the suspect, which was unusual for the tight-knit team.

"I don't think many of the kids (teammates) knew him. He was kind of a loner," she said.

Jackie Mitchell, a furniture mover who lives several blocks from the suspect's apartment building in Colorado, said he had drinks with Holmes at a bar on Tuesday night, though he showed no sign of distress or violence.

After Holmes approached him, "we just talked about football. He had a backpack and geeky glasses and seemed like a real intelligent guy, and I figured he was one of the college students," Mitchell said.

When Mitchell saw Holmes' photo after the shooting, "the hair stood up on my back," he said. "I know this guy."

Holmes is not talking to police and has asked for a lawyer, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the case. Police found jars of chemicals in Holmes' booby-trapped apartment with wires nearby, the law enforcement official said.

When he surrendered meekly in the movie house parking lot, Holmes told authorities what he'd done at his residence in the Denver suburb of Aurora, the third most populous city in Colorado.

"Our hearts go out to those who were involved in this tragedy and to the families and friends of those involved," Holmes' family said in a statement Friday. "We ask that the media respect our privacy during this difficult time."

San Diego Superior Court spokeswoman Karen Dalton said there were no records found under his name, not even for a traffic ticket. Riverside County prosecutors also have no criminal record for him, said John Hall, a spokesman for the district attorney's office.

On Friday morning, police escorted the suspect's father from the family's San Diego home. The mother stayed inside, receiving visitors who came to offer support.

San Diego police spokeswoman Lt. Andra Brown spoke to reporters in the driveway of the Holmes' home, on behalf of the family.

"As you can understand, the Holmes family is very upset about all of this," she said. "It's a tragic event and it's taken everyone by surprise."
