When it comes to small businesses, does print advertising still make sense? The short answer, of course, is yes: print advertising still makes sense for plenty of small businesses. The question you need to ask is this: do print ads still make sense for your business. That answer isn?t so obvious because, like so many things in marketing, the answer depends on a variety of factors. Which brings us to the purpose of this post?let?s talk about those factors and how they might influence your decision.

1. What are your expectations? First, it?s important to be clear about your expectations going in so that you have a way to measure success and evaluate the print campaign?s effectiveness. Second, it?s important to state your expectations and share them with some others (e.g. a board of directors, a marketing person, people in your networking group) so you can get a sense if your expectations are realistic.

2. Have you had success with print advertising before? How recent? This might be an obvious consideration, but it?s easy to wax nostalgic about past advertising attempts and think they were more effective than they actually were. Do you have metrics you can review? How many leads came in (that you know of) from your print ads? How many of those leads converted into customers? How recent was your print campaign? If your print campaign circa 1998 was extremely effective, don?t expect the same thing to necessarily happen in 2012. Remember, Google, Facebook, Twitter, smart phones, and tablets didn?t exist then (in other words, the number of distractions has increased dramatically).

3. Will your audience see ?em? Again, an obvious point, but it?s worth stating here because the best print advertising ?deal? in the world won?t make any difference if your audience doesn?t see the ads. All publications have media kits. You can often download these directly from the publication?s website (look for ?Advertising? in the footer links or ?About? section). If it?s not available on the site, ask your sales rep to email it to you. The media kit contains a wealth of information, including demographic info like gender breakdown, household income, education levels, etc. In other words, it will provide a good snapshot of who reads the publication. If you?re selling spa services, you won?t want to run print ads in a hunting magazine (an extreme example, but you get the idea).

4. Are you ready to negotiate? The good news about print advertising is this: today, you?re in the driver?s seat. Print publications have gone through a transformation over the last decade, and some of have survived better than others. Big businessesthat used to spends hundreds of thousands of dollars on print ads every year have taken a good chunk of that money online. This, obviously, has hurt print pubs (specifically newspapers; read this report about how newspapers lose $10 in print for every digital $1). What this means for you is the price you?re quoted isn?t always the final price. There?s room for negotiation on cost, but also added-value items like ad space on the website, banner ads on newsletters, or a longer flight in the print pub itself. Don?t be afraid to speak up, ask questions, and?as we?ve all been counseled to do when buying a new car?walk away if you?re not satisfied with the ad package. More than likely you can land a deal that really is a deal.

5. What?s the publication?s ?shelf life?? Advertising in anything with the word? ?guide,? ?annual,? or ?specialty issue? in the title can be worthwhile simply because of the publication?s shelf life, meaning it?s not necessarily something that will be read and then tossed. You might think that?s enough and you?ll simply record who mentions the ad. But what about the people who forget? Or what if you?re running an ad in multiple publications? How will you know which ad is bringing in results? Instead, get a dedicated phone number or extension, one that?s used only for one ad. Or if you want people to take action on your website, create a specific landing page around the ad?s offer. You?ll be able to measure the number of visits and, if there?s a form to fill out, how many of those visitors convert into leads (free analytics software like Google Analytics is something we recommend all business owners install on their websites).

7. How important is added exposure and branding to your business? Print advertising can be an effective way to reach more people and brand your core messages or tagline. The rule of thumb used to be that someone needed to see your message seven times before it began to compute/register in the person?s head. This number has no doubt gone up thanks to the increased number of channels vying for people?s attention: the Internet, social media, cable channels, smart phones, etc. If you?re looking to solidify your brand, a print campaign can help, but keep in mind that branding is a harder thing to measure.

The jury is still out on how effective QR codes are, but according to ScanLife, ?QR code scans increased 300% in 2011 compared to 2010.? Remember, your mileage may vary. The key is to make the QR code?s landing page/content truly remarkable. This isn?t always easy to pull off.

9. What other marketing and advertising do you have in place? There?s rarely a good reason to have all your eggs in one marketing/advertising basket. Your marketing budget should include a solid mix of programs, including those that you know for a fact work, some that you?re still measuring, and others that you might consider ?wild cards.? Obviously, the biggest chunk of your budget will be geared towards the stuff that works. And yes, it?s possible some of those ?still measuring? and wild card programs might eventually work their way onto that list. Determine which bucket print ads fall in for your business and plan your spending accordingly.

Remember, when making a decision about any sort of marketing or advertising program?be it print ads, online ads, radio ads, social media, you name it?you need to determine whether it works for your business.

KUWAIT CITY (AP) ? A Kuwaiti company suing the Carlyle Group over a $25 million investment that went bad is now accusing the private equity firm of marketing the deal without a license as it seeks to have its case heard in Kuwaiti courts.

The latest claim by Kuwait's National Industries Group adds a new twist to its more than two-and-a-half year legal challenge to Carlyle, and could complicate the American company's relationships with other wealthy Mideast investors.

NIG's lawsuit focuses on a Carlyle investment fund that was one of the earliest casualties of the financial crisis when it collapsed in 2008. The fund has been the subject of multiple lawsuits against Washington-based Carlyle.

In a motion filed this month with a Delaware court hearing the case, NIG argues that the dispute should be heard in Kuwait because Carlyle lacked the legal basis to pitch the deal there in the first place.

Selling foreign securities or shares in investment funds in Kuwait requires a license from local authorities, according to a declaration by lawyer Ahmed Zakaria Abdel-Magied filed by NIG attorneys. He added that marketing such investments without a license makes the underlying deal invalid.

NIG said Sunday it believes it is entitled to the return of its $25 million investment under Kuwaiti law.

"Carlyle was more than happy to conduct its sales presentations in Kuwait and close its deals in Kuwait," NIG's general manager, Ahmed Hassan, said in a statement. "But now that the moment has come to deal with the ugly aftermath ... Carlyle would prefer to try its luck in Delaware."

Carlyle has tried hard to woo clients in the oil-rich Gulf Arab states. It opened an office in the Mideast financial hub of Dubai in 2006, and its shareholders include Mubadala Development Co., an investment company owned by the United Arab Emirates capital, Abu Dhabi.

The Carlyle fund involved in the Kuwait case, known as Carlyle Capital Corp. Ltd., went bust in March 2008. It used high levels of debt to invest in securities backed by bundles of home mortgages that had been given a seemingly safe AAA rating by credit rating agencies.

Carlyle declined to comment on the case Sunday. It has previously said it will fight NIG's suit.

"We believe these claims are without merit and intend to vigorously contest all such allegations and are currently unable to anticipate what impact they may have on us," Carlyle said in its most recent quarterly report, filed on Aug. 14.

Private equity firms such as Carlyle raise money from big investors and then use that money to invest in companies or other investments. The industry is under close scrutiny because of the U.S. presidential election and presumed Republican nominee Mitt Romney's former role as an executive at another private equity firm, Bain Capital.

Kuwait's NIG started out in the 1960s as a building materials company and later began investing across a range of industries.

It is partly backed by the Kharafi clan, one of Kuwait's most prominent merchant families. A branch of the Kuwaiti government, the Public Institution for Social Security, is a minority investor.

Like many Gulf companies, it has struggled to meet its debt obligations in the wake of the financial crisis. Faced with a looming $475 million loan repayment due earlier this month, it approached its lenders about reworking the terms on the debt so it could repay over a longer period.

Just days before the Aug. 16 repayment deadline came due, NIG announced it was calling off the effort to adjust the repayment terms because it had managed to line up new financing.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? A huge explosion rocked Venezuela's biggest oil refinery early Saturday, killing at least 19 people and injuring more than 50 others in the deadliest disaster in memoryfor the country's key oil industry.

Balls of fire rose over the Amuay refinery, one of the largest in the world, in video posted on the Internet by people who were nearby at the time.

Those killed included a 10-year-old boy, and at least 53 people were injured, Falcon state Gov. Stella Lugo said on state television. She said firefighters had controlled the flames at the refinery on the Paraguana Peninsula in western Venezuela, where large clouds of smoke were rising.

"The areas that had to be evacuated were evacuated," Lugo said, according to the state-run Venezuelan News Agency. "The situation is controlled. Of course they're still a fire rising very high, but ... the specialists tell me there is no risk of another explosion."

The blast occurred after 1 a.m. when a gas leak created a cloud that ignited, Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez said. Some nearby houses were damaged by the blast, he said on television.

"That gas generated a cloud that later exploded and has caused fires in at least two tanks of the refinery and surrounding areas," Ramirez said on state television. "The blast wave was of a significant magnitude."

Images in state media showed the flames casting an orange glow against the night sky. One photograph showed an injured man being wheeled away on a stretcher.

Ramirez said oil workers will determine what caused the gas leak and were inspecting the damage along with troops. He said supplies of fuel had been cut off to the part of the refinery that was still in flames.

Troops were securing the area at the refinery, Lugo said.

Vice President Elias Jaua said on his Twitter account that the military was deployed to the area and that air ambulances were dispatched to ferry the wounded. The defense minister was traveling to the refinery along with Ramirez and other officials, Jaua said.

Amuay is part of the Paraguana Refinery Complex, which also includes the adjacent Cardon refinery. Together, the two refineries process about 900,000 barrels of crude a day and 200,000 barrels of gasoline. It was unclear to what extent the explosion might affect oil shipments from Venezuela, a member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.

Elisabeth Murdoch: I don't want the top job

EDINBURGH (Reuters) - Elisabeth Murdoch said on Friday she had no ambition to succeed her father Rupert as head of his News Corp global media empire, but had intervened to limit her brother's ambitions.

"I really harbour absolutely no ambition for a top job (as head of News Corp)," she told a question and answer session at the annual Edinburgh Television Festival.

She was speaking the day after she used a keynote speech to attack James, previously seen as the most likely Murdoch to take over as head of News Corp, and to praise the values of her father.

That speech had been interpreted by some as her pitch for the top job, portraying herself as having the purpose to lead the company after it lost its way in the wake of the phone-hacking scandal at the now-defunct News of the World newspaper.

Elisabeth left the family business to her younger siblings James and Lachlan more than a decade ago.

She said she had urged her brother James to step back and had said Rebekah Brooks, her father's favourite executive, should resign in the wake of the phone hacking crisis that engulfed the company last summer.

"Yes," she said in response to a question of whether she had urged those changes in family crisis talks. "It was said within closed walls and Rebekah did resign."

Elisabeth also said she had no plans to join the board "at the moment", but would continue to make a contribution as a shareholder.

"I think and hope the family will be positive contributors even as shareholders in terms of the long-term interest of the company and the other shareholders, but that's really as far as I see it," she said.

Elisabeth was going to take a position on the News Corp board after the company bought her production company Shine, but did not do so as the crisis raised questions about the family's management of the group.

In the wake of the phone-hacking scandal, James Murdoch resigned as chairman of News Group Newspapers and then as executive chairman of News Corp's newspaper arm.

According to the Village Voice, "Isabella, announced on a private Facebook page this week that her boyfriend Eddie Frencher signed Scientology's billion-year Sea Org contract about a week ago and is now going through its Estates Project Force boot camp in Los Angeles... Former Sea Org executives tell us that Isabella would be under intense pressure to join the hardcore Scientology organization herself or be forced to give up her relationship with Frencher."

In 1966, L. Ron Hubbard stepped down as executive director of Scientology to devote himself to research and writing, and went on to form the Sea Organization, an elite group within Scientology that was based on three ships, the Diana, the Athena, and the Apollo. According to reports, Sea Org members routinely work 100 hour weeks, for $50 a week, and have no contact with family or friends outside of the organization.

Reps for Tom Cruise have denied that Isabella is signing up to Sea Org though, stating: "[Isabella is] not a public figure and deserves privacy. However, she is not joining the church's religious order."

ICE agents sue own agency over deferred deportations

A group of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agents filed a lawsuit against their own agency Thursday, arguing that the Obama administration is not letting them fully identify and deport illegal immigrants.

Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano says her department does not have the manpower or money to deport the 11 million illegal immigrants in the USA, so she issued a memorandum last year ordering immigration officials to focus their efforts on dangerous illegal immigrants. In June, Obama announced a program that will allow up to 1.7 million illegal immigrants brought to the USA as children to have deportations deferred for at least two years.

The 10 ICE agents suing Napolitano and ICE Director John Morton say those directives violate the Constitution and federal immigration law. "We are federal law enforcement officers who are being ordered to break the law," said Chris Crane, an ICE agent and president of the National Immigration and Customs Enforcement Council, a union for ICE employees. "This directive puts ICE agents and officers in a horrible position."

ICE spokesman Ross Feinstein did not comment on the lawsuit but said more than half of the nearly 400,000 illegal immigrants deported in 2011 had been convicted of crimes, the largest number in the agency's history. He said that shows the decision to focus on the most dangerous illegal immigrants is a policy that works, and June's decision to defer deportation for young illegal immigrants enhances that strategy.

A spokesman for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Obama may have overstepped his authority by ordering the deportation deferments, and Romney would forge a long-term solution with Congress instead of relying on Obama's "stop-gap measure."

"The courts will have to sort this out, but this kind of uncertainty is unacceptable as these young people brought here as children are seeking clarity on their long-term status," spokesman Ryan Williams said.

The lawsuit, filed Thursday in a Dallas federal court, requests that a judge strike down the two directives and protect the agents from any retribution for their lawsuit.

The suit is funded by NumbersUSA, a group that proposes lower levels of legal and illegal immigration, and the attorney is Kris Kobach, the secretary of State of Kansas who has helped Arizona and Alabama craft strict anti-illegal-immigration laws. His work on this lawsuit is not part of his official state duties.

The lawsuit was supported by some GOP legislators who have criticized Obama's immigration plans as "backdoor amnesty."

"These agent's mission is to keep our borders secure, but the head of their agency is directing them otherwise, telling them to undermine their missions and contradict immigration law," Sen. David Vitter, R-La.

Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., said the program actually helps ICE officials by allowing them to focus on the most dangerous illegal immigrants. "Deferred action is a major boost to law enforcement who do not have to waste time on honor students and can do the harder work of actually tracking down and deporting criminals," he said.

The end of an era? Branding horses does not enable them to be identified

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? Despite increasing evidence that branding foals causes the animals stress, many horse breeders still claim that this practice represents the best method for identifying the animals. Although the debate has raged for some time, nobody has thought to pose the crucial question: how reliably can brand marks be read later? This issue has now been addressed by the team of J?rg and Christine Aurich at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna. The results have just been made available online in The Veterinary Journal and may well spell the end of the line for the traditional practice of branding horses.

There are many reasons why it is important to be able to identify farm animals, horses and small companion animals. Unique identification marks are essential for ensuring the correctness of breeding programmes, for preventing the spread of disease and for eliminating the possibility of deceit in competitions or when animals are sold. The traditional method of marking larger farm animals relies on branding with hot irons or on ear-tagging but this is deemed inappropriate for use on dogs and cats, which are identified by the implant of a microchip transponder. Until recently, horses were generally branded but following concerns that the practice is unnecessarily cruel there has been a gradual switch towards the use of microchips. Branding has essentially been discontinued in the European Union, although several countries still accept it and breed registries claim that this traditional method is perfectly satisfactory and obviates the need for costly equipment.

Comparisons between the two methods for marking horses have focused on how they are perceived by the animals: does either method cause more stress or more harm to the horse? Surprisingly, however, no attention has been paid to the other side of the coin. There is no doubt that microchips can be unambiguously decoded, providing the necessary equipment is available, but how well can brand marks be read? The issue has now been examined by J?rg and Christine Aurich of the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna.

Brands on horses generally combine a symbol to indicate the particular breed with a two-digit number to identify the individual animal. To assess the readability of the markings, the researchers asked three experienced people to record the brands of about 250 horses participating in an equestrian tournament in Germany. All three testers were able to recognize the breed symbols on about 90% of the animals and for about 84% of the animals the symbol was recorded correctly by all three people. However, the situation for the two-digit numbers was dramatically different. While each of the three readers read the numbers correctly on about half of the horses, the correct number was recorded by all three of them for less than 40% of the animals.

To assess the legibility of brand marking under 'ideal' conditions, the researchers examined the markings on 28 horses that had been euthanized, in each case for reasons not related to branding. Surprisingly, the brand marks could be clearly identified on only nine of the animals, while for six horses neither the brand symbol nor the two-digit number could be deciphered even after the site of branding (generally the left thigh but in two cases the left side of the neck) had been shaved. This finding confirmed the unreliability of marking horses by branding. At the same time, the researchers naturally examined the sites where the horses had been branded for evidence of tissue damage. Nearly all of the horses had histological changes at the branding sites, consistent with having experienced a third-degree thermal injury.

J?rg Aurich sums up the results concisely. "Branding is clearly associated with local tissue damage and the markings are often insufficiently clear to be decoded, even by experienced observers or after the horse has died. There really isn't any reason to continue to mark horses in this outdated way."
