Will Gold 401k Really Safeguard One's Assets? | Class Act Homes

The majority of employees have established their retirement by opening a retirement program. The most popular program is the 401k plan. Still, it?s advisable for retirement savings to be set with trustworthy investments which are more reliable and constant precious metal like gold. If you possess an active 401k account, you may turn this to a 401k gold program.

In order to convert your retirement account to a gold 401k account, you need the assistance of a gold company to rollover the plan. It is a quick procedure and you don?t have to pay additional fees. The good thing when acquiring this program is that you won?t be able to simply make investments with gold, but in other rare metals too.

Gold is among the most desirable rare metals concerning its value. In addition, it?s one of the rare metals which never go down in price. The worth of gold keeps on increasing that?s the reason why it?s a wise type of investment. On the other hand, you may not receive gold bullion in physical form on your gold 401k program. The investment is instantly stored in a recognized and secured vault of precious metals.

You are kept informed of your investment every six periods including the current rates. Just like the retirement program, you can encash anytime your gold asset but you may be billed for a certain expense by cashing out sooner than your retirement.

The advantage of acquiring gold assets is it generates significant amount as compared to typical 401k plan. This is because gold continues to soar high on its value. As opposed to a typical 401k plan, investments on bonds, stocks, and ETFs are rather risky and earn just a little compared to this precious metal. At times, stocks and options are lower and if it happens, your investments would be impacted.

There is another thing which you should realize prior to rolling over the typical 401k account to the 401k gold plan. You need the assistance of the gold dealer to get this done. You need to know more details on the ins and outs of gold investing. You should know the pros and cons to help you understand how your investment works.

Retirement isn?t just about solidifying the future. It is not just about investing the personal savings for something which may help you when you reach the age of retirement. It should be an asset which also generates income. Being employed for many years and investing your dollars on the wrong investment will likely be devastating. It?s essential to find more suitable alternatives for your retirement plan. It is not easy that your hard-earned dollars can just vanish within a matter of seconds if you are on the wrong retirement program.

The presence of gold 401k investment helps it to be much more profitable on your retirement plan. You do not have to stress of dropping the value as this precious metal carries on to be more expensive each year. If this flow persists, there is no valid reason why you will not gain more as you reach the age of retirement.

Before you decide to transfer the 401k into gold, you should be confident about it. There are professionals who wish to help in this respect. For details, kindly visit: 401k Gold

Shifting from coursework to a final exam will not increase stress ...

JohnbaldJohn Bald welcomes the new Ebacc and signs that the "curse" of mixed ability teaching is to be tackled

Last week was the best for Conservatives in education since the election, with major policy announcements on Monday and Thursday, and the opposition left without much to say.

The first, on examinations, ?continues the restoration of intellect to a central place in education through the Ebacc. The original idea checked the freefall in foreign languages, but was forced to include two science subjects (rather than, say, one science and IT) because single science GCSE had been dumbed down so far that no-one saw it as a qualification at all. ?

The new ?Ebacc is compact, leaving scope for schools to offer a good range of additional subjects, and opens the curriculum to further good ideas from the international baccalaureate, to which some successful schools have turned in their disaffection from A level. Foundations for the reform of secondary science are being laid in the new primary curriculum, which is based on the disciplines of separate sciences.

The replacement of coursework by a final examination is long overdue. Part of the problem is corruption - the opportunity to resubmit coursework time and again, after intervention from teachers and well-educated parents and friends, ?means that many candidates are not being judged on their own work, and puts those who do have to rely on their own efforts at a disadvantage.

There are very few people who put their principles above their instinct to help their children - in the late eighties, ?I watched a high-minded senior education officer write an extended essay for his daughter who was taking a degree in his own subject, ?handing each completed page to his secretary for typing. The internet has made matters worse, and I have seen preloaded powerpoint presentations given to candidates, with the instruction to click on each link and download what they found at the other end, without adding any words of their own as this would be risky. (I reported the practice to the Board concerned).

The argument ?that coursework is an antidote to stress does not take account of the negative effect of low grades. ?Suppose I want an A and my early coursework grades are C. ?I don't just have to improve my later work, but deal with the burden of these early grades, wasting time retaking them that should have been spent in improving my knowledge ?and thinking. This system has turned two years that should be used for teaching and learning into one continuous test, with a major net increase in stress.

The effect is worse still for those who receive continuous grades of E, F or below. ? ?The incessant flow of low grades grinds these pupils down, telling them all the time that they are below standard and useless. ?They ?will be much better served by an examination with a gentle early slope that they know will allow them to show what they can do, ?and a steeper rise later to enable those who should get an A genuinely to achieve it.

The hyperinflation of A grades has misled people into thinking ?they will find A level straightforward, when in fact they are being set up for struggle and disappointment. The lowest grade of pass should be E, or perhaps O, and there should be clear demarcation between grades A to C. The examiners who told pupils that grade F was a pass were not living in the real world. Ofsted should also go back to a points system for grading passes, to remove the perverse incentive for schools to aim at C grades.

Ofsted's good day, and the second major building block of the week, came on Thursday, with Sir Michael Wilshaw's reports on school improvement, and the critical report on the use of the pupil premium in most schools, which he presented very well on Radio 4. The description of successful approaches to improving schools begins with strong leadership from the headteacher, backed by clear assessment to ensure that pupils are given the right work, and devolved management and self-help to improve teaching. The criticism of the ?curse? of mixed-ability grouping without mixed ability teaching is also clear and hard to dispute. It would be no bad thing to investigate the effects of ability grouping in inspections.

The unresolved problem lies in Labour's legacy of authoritarian school management, illustrated by heads' use of the pupil premium for their own purposes rather than to help those for whom it is intended, for example by funding extra classes after school hours or providing food so that they can do their homework in school. ?One of Sir Michael's most distinguished predecessors, Senior Chief Inspector Sheila Browne, said that "English schools are communities", operating on shared values and co-operation. ?This is not compatible with the idea that headteachers can do whatever they like.

HBT: Wright ties all-time Mets hit record

Everyone on the planet noted it when Derek Jeter tied and then broke the Yankees all-time hit record, so we may as well note it for David Wright: last night he tied?Ed Kranepool for the most hits in franchise history, with 1,418.

Kranepool was more of a story of?perseverance, of course, as he took nine more seasons and nearly 600 more games to do it. Still, pretty cool.

Without looking, I?m going to take some time this morning and see if I can figure out the hits leaders for each team. I bet I can get, like, 15 of them. ?Maybe you guys ? on the honor system ? should play that game in the comments.

Pop Art

1970's Advertisement for Coca-Cola in a can. Coca-Cola ad from the 1970s

Courtesy Coca-Cola.

As a child of the 1970s, I have a distinct and curious memory about the landscapes I inhabited: They glittered with glinting metal, not the gold of El Dorado but the effluvia of the consumer society. I am talking about aluminum can tabs.

If, as the saying goes, we are never more than three (or five, or 10) feet from a spider, so too did those little trinkets?a sturdy ring pull attached to a curled, wedge-shaped ?tear strip,? the disposable remnant of the mechanism then used to open cans of beer or soda?rarely seem out of range: Studding the dirt dugouts of Little League, clustered near the concrete parking stops at convenience stores, sunk between seat cushions in cars, draped as a necklace around your friend?s stoner older sister. When Matthew Broderick needed to hack the payphone in War Games, his tool was right at his feet. The sand at Normandy is said to be 4 percent war shrapnel. The beaches in Florida were easily that in soda shrapnel, a fact recorded by the frustrated reactions of stooped snowbirds sweeping metal detectors. ?I blew out my flip flop,? noted Jimmy Buffett, in the song that begat a lifestyle, ?and stepped on a pop top.? He was not alone: In 1976, the New York Times, commenting on beach injuries at Rockaway, noted that ?a large percentage were due to cuts inflicted by discarded pop tabs.?

There was an inherent problem in multipart portable consumer packaging: What to do with the sealing mechanism, once so vital and now so worthless (and dangerous), after you had opened the can? Often, it seemed, the answer was to simply chuck it. Another solution was to deposit the pulled tab in the can. While this may have been less environmentally injurious, it was not without its dangers. As an article in The Journal of the American Medical Association noted, at least seven children over a period of a little over three years had ?been treated for complications of ingestion or aspiration of pull tabs from aluminum beverage cans.? One particularly pernicious problem is that aluminum often does not show up on X-rays; hence the appearance, in journals like Pediatric Emergency Care, of such startling articles as: ?Swallowed Coke Can Tab: Is it Still Stuck in the Esophagus??

Indeed, it was at a radiology conference in 1974 that a physician named Lee Rogers?who had inadvertently swallowed a can tab during a basketball game?broached the idea of the can tab hazard to the medical community. And it was this single panel at a medical conference that helped launch a revolution in the design of our aluminum cans. As described in the American Journal of Roentgenology, Rogers? presentation triggered a media crusade, with more than 400 newspapers picking up the story. (Rogers, the AJR notes, also received negative feedback from the beverage industry, which was not keen on coming up for a costly replacement for an otherwise functional technology.) ?Aluminum pull-tabs are now common elements of our environment and inevitable offenders as foreign bodies in the esophagus,? the Journal of Pediatrics sternly noted in 1978, sounding like a Red Scare-era FBI dossier.

Can tabs were an ecological disgrace and a threat to children: Is there a more potent nexus for citizen outrage? The hunt for a new and better design was on. But the irony is that the pull-tab, unveiled just more than a decade before, had been hailed as a remarkable solution to an age-old problem. As its inventor, an Ohio toolmaker named Ermal Fraze, put it, ?I personally did not invent the easy-open can end. People have been working on that since 1800. What I did was develop a method of attaching a tab on the can top.?

Prior to Fraze?s invention, cans, both steel and aluminum, required a separate opener, the so-called ?church key.? As Henry Petroski notes in The Evolution of Useful Things, Fraze was at a family picnic in 1956, where he found ?plenty of beer but no church key,? and resorted to opening a brew via a car bumper. After an insomniac night and a spell at his workbench, Fraze had his concept. As Petroski describes, the actual engineering?getting a top that was easy enough to pull off but could withstand the force of the can?s pressure?was tricky: ?Some early pull tabs were being blown off prematurely ? so Fraze and other inventors came up with schemes to direct benignly the first whoosh of escaping gas away from the tab itself.?

Social Media + Holidays = STRESS! 7 Ways To Cope? | The Online ...

Social media + Holiday = Stress. How to Cope.

Onetangi Beach ? 2.4km of golden white sands on Waiheke Island, New Zealand

It?s Monday and I?m recovering from a cracking weekend away on Waiheke Island with one of my besties.

You see, my bestie ? Sharon Stephenson ? is a travel writer who was commissioned to do a piece on Waiheke Island, a gorgeous sub-tropical island north-east of Auckland, New Zealand. As it turns out, I also own a holiday rental?there (?What a coincidence!? she says in mock surprise).?Hence my?rubber arm got twisted and I stumbled along for the ride. Our itinerary included lots of wine tasting (in other words, ?drinking?), lots of eating, and lots of laughing till the cows came home. Plus I got free PR for my holiday rental too!

Social media + Holiday = Stress. How to Cope.

While being a poser, my Tweets and posts were still going out. Awesome!

But being my first weekend away since starting this journey, I?ve discovered that leaving my business (my baby) behind can be really stressful.

Last week, I was in panic station as I rushed to have everything ready before I left. This included fixing issues with my email subscription system (more about this in another post), writing and delivering my blog post, topping up my Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn accounts to cover three days away, as well as organising loads of different things for my holiday rental. I knew the weekend would leave no time but to eat, drink, play and sleep (yes it was hard work!). Plus WIFI access was few and far between.

Which got me thinking? How would I cope on a longer holiday? So here?s what I reckon:

1. Only go places with internet access.

Yep, sad but true. The unbeaten track and untouched islands are fabulous holiday spots, but as an online marketer you need good, reliable internet access wherever you go. For me, it?s goodbye to?Koh Kood?- one of my favourite remote islands.

2. Back up your laptop.

In my haste, I forgot to back up my laptop before this trip ? an omission that could?ve been disastrous if my laptop got stolen, dropped in the sea, or got damaged in some other way. Oh the thought of it gives me the heebie jeebies!

But when I do remember to back up, I use my Mac?s built-in Time Machine system and a 60Gb external hard drive. I reckon if you?re going away for long periods you should always take your back-up drive with you, and store it separately from your laptop ? NOT in your laptop bag.

3. Be WIFI savvy.

With the internet being a key part of your business, scope out the local WIFI spots ahead of time to avoid last-minute panic while away. Also check out this great article about security when on a public WIFI.

4. Get a local SIM card.

Mobile roaming prices are ridiculously expensive so the next time you?re overseas, buy a local SIM card for your smartphone.

To get internet access, simply hook your iPhone (with local SIM card) to your?iPhone personal hotspot, which you?ll find in your phone ?Settings?.?With Android phones?you can download an app that will turn your phone into an internet hotspot.

It may mean losing access to your standard SIM card for a while, but a little swapping and changing when required can save you a whole lot of dosh in the long run!

5. Use an online document sharing tool or two.Social media + Holiday = Stress. How to cope...

I?m currently using?Google Drive (ex Google Docs) to save all my important files and documents online ? which means I can access them from pretty much anywhere with internet access; at an internet cafe, or on a friend?s computer for instance.

Everyone?s also been raving about Evernote?lately. Evernote is a software that makes it easy to take notes and manage your files.?Apparently once you?ve stored the info on your computer or phone using Evernote, you don?t even need internet to access it. And it synchs with all your hardware too.

Evernote?s next on my list of tools to check out. You should check it out too! Check out Evernote

6. Get a back-up computer.

A friend of mine was recently in Bolivia when his laptop died on him. In Bolivia, good technicians and late-model computers are hard to come by so he was left without a computer for weeks.

Because my laptop is the hub of my business, not having one would feel like having my right arm chopped off. So I?ve got my eye on an iPad as it?s light and easy to carry, and I can use it as back-up in case anything happened to my laptop. Do you have a back-up computer?

7. Chill?it?s not the end of the world.Social media + Holiday = Stress. How to Cope.

Starting an online business is so full on I?d become a bit of a stress bunny?

But what I?ve come to realise is that missing a (self-imposed) deadline or losing a few Twitter followers isn?t the end of the world.?Holidays are supposed to be fun, and as long as I top up my social media, connect with others every couple of days (which I do enjoy), or perhaps write a blog post once a week, I?m probably doing better than most people.

So if you?re a stress bunny like me, why not take a deep breath and chill a little? I?m already finding life a little easier with that tiny change of mindset.

So what do you think??How do you keep your business running while on holiday? I?d love to hear your thoughts.

Iran threatens attacks on US bases in event of war

(AP) ? A senior commander in Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard warned that Iran will target U.S. bases in the region in the event of war with Israel, raising the prospect of a broader conflict that would force other countries to get involved, Iranian state television reported Sunday.

The comments by Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, who heads the Guard's aerospace division, came amid tension over Iran's nuclear program and Israel's suggestion that it might unilaterally strike Iranian nuclear facilities to scuttle what the United States and its allies believe are efforts to build a bomb. Tehran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.

Hajizadeh said no Israeli attack can happen without the support of its most important ally, the United States, making all U.S. military bases a legitimate target.

"For this reason, we will enter a confrontation with both parties and will definitely be at war with American bases should a war break out," Hajizadeh said in remarks that were posted on the website of Iran's state Al-Alam TV. U.S. facilities in Bahrain, Qatar and Afghanistan would be targeted, he said.

"There will be no neutral country in the region," Hajizadeh said. "To us, these bases are equal to U.S. soil."

The U.S. Fifth fleet is based in Bahrain and the U.S. has a heavy military presence in Afghanistan.

The Iranian warning appears an attempt to reinforce the potential wider consequences of an attack by Israel. The message is not only intended for Washington, but to its Gulf Arab allies that are fearful of a regional conflict that could disrupt oil shipment and cripple business hubs in places such as Dubai and Qatar's capital Doha.

It also comes during a major show of naval power in the Gulf by U.S.-led forces taking part in military exercises, including mine-sweeping drills. The U.S. Navy claims the maneuvers are not directly aimed at Iran, but the West and its regional allies have made clear they would react against attempts by Tehran to carry out threats to try to close critical Gulf oil shipping lanes in retaliation for tighter sanctions.

Despite Israeli hints of a military strike, Iran's military commanders believe Israel is unlikely to take unilateral action against Iran. The Guard's top commander, Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari, said last week that Iran believes the United States won't attack Iran because its military bases in the Middle East are within the range of Iran's missiles.

Iran has also warned that oil shipments through the strategic Strait of Hormuz will be in jeopardy if a war breaks out between Iran and the United States. Iranian officials had previously threatened to close the waterway, the route for a fifth of the world's oil, if there is war.

Israel believes that any attack on Iran would likely unleash retaliation in the form of Iranian missiles as well as rocket attacks by Iranian proxies Hezbollah and Hamas on its northern and southern borders.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says international diplomatic efforts and economic sanctions against Iran have failed to deter its nuclear ambitions, and he has urged President Barack Obama to declare "red lines" that would trigger an American attack on Iran's nuclear facilities, coupling his appeals with veiled threats of an Israeli attack.

Obama has rejected these calls, saying diplomacy and U.S.-led sanctions must be given more time and that Iran will never be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons. American officials have pressed Israel not to attack Iran unilaterally, a move that could set off regional mayhem just ahead of the November election.

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is currently in New York to attend the annual U.N. General Assembly and could seek to use his speech and meetings later this week to highlight the possible risks ? including sharply higher oil prices ? if military action is taken.

State of the Movement: Canada's Blood & Honour Part 3

NOTE: As this article is pretty screen shot heavy, we decided that we would divide it into three parts. This article is Part 3.

Noble doesn't spend as much time online as in the past (though given the terms of his release, he should have been arrested when he first began posting online again). In fact, other than his reply on the thread discussing his attendance at the Pride Week events, it had been some time since he had logged in to write anything on the Blood & Honour International forums.

Our readers could imagine his surprise when he found that he had been banned. But at least he dealt with his banning with class and dignity:

Wait. We mean he threw a hissy fit.

Now, we've since learned that the above post has now been deleted or hidden and the link he provides no longer brings up anything of particular interest. If only someone had taken the appropriate scr.... oh just get to the screen shots and stop being so coy!!!

Nicely done. In this short excerpt we find Noble pretty much confirming everything we've written about on this blog over the years:
  • Members engaged in acts of random violence.
  • They attack each other as much as they do the people they overtly hate.
  • They talk about each other behind each other's backs and will "out" people who piss them off (not that we didn't know that "Endseig" was Jessie already).
  • They like the idea of children, but when it comes to being parents, well, not so much (and Bill, to comment on the parenting skills of someone else from the likes of you takes a hell of a lot of chutzpah).
This, ladies and gentlemen, represents the quality that we've come to know and love as the, "Master Race."

Yikes.

Women's Health ? Gynecologic Cancer Warning Signs :- Meal Plans ...

?

Article by Rachelle Kirk

Gynecologic Cancer is actually a grouping of several different types of cancer that affect women. The tissues and organs that are targeted by gynecologic cancer are portions of a females reproductive system. This includes cervical cancer, uterine cancer, fallopian tube cancer, vulvar cancer, vaginal cancer, and ovarian cancer.Although any woman is potentially at risk for developing female (gynecological) cancer, certain factors can increase the likelihood of developing this disease. Smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, HPV infection, and the use of particular medications (such as certain types of birth control medications) can increase a womans odds of developing gynecologic cancer. Because heredity plays a role, women with a family history of cancer have a higher probability of getting this disease.Even though we all know how crucial early detection is when dealing with a potentially life threatening illness, no one likes to consider the fact that they might have a deadly disease. However, if you experience any of these warning signs and symptoms, you need to speak with your healthcare provider in order to find out the cause.Pelvic pain or pressure. Any type of pelvic pain or pressure should be taken very seriously. This includes pain in the pelvis that appears during certain situations (such as when you twist your body a specific way), when you bend, move, or during sexual intercourse. These are all warning signs that need to be evaluated by your doctor.Abnormal bleeding. This is a very important sign. Bleeding when it is not your monthly period, bleeding after menopause, bleeding in between periods, and unusually heavy flow during your period these are all warning signs of gynecologic cancer. Report any abnormal vaginal, urinary tract, or anal bleeding to your doctor as soon as possible.Abnormal discharge. Inform your gynecologist about any changes from your normal vaginal discharge.Any sore that does not heal. If you have a sore that either doesnt heal or that heals very slowly, let your doctor know.Continual feeling of fullness. If you have trouble eating because you already feel full, or experience the feeling of fullness soon after you begin eating, inform your healthcare provider.Changes in bathroom habits. Changes in your normal bladder (frequency or urgency) or bowel patterns (including nausea, diarrhea, gas, and indigestion) that last longer than 2 weeks should be reported to your doctor.Unintended weight changes. If you suddenly lose weight without dieting or exercise, or unexpectedly begin to gain weight for no apparent reason, let your doctor know.Low back pain. Although many non-cancerous conditions can cause low back pain, pain in the low back can sometimes indicate a problem with the ovaries or uterus. Only a doctor can tell for certain.Other signs include: Skin color changes, burning pain in the genital region, and abdominal bloating.Have annual physicals, routine gynecologic examinations, and pap tests in order to safeguard yourself against the dangers of cancer. Speak with your doctor about any unusual changes that you may be experiencing, especially if you have one or several of the above warning signs of gynecologic cancer.

Are we talking remote desktop or local, you didn't mention in the first post. What I mentioned previously was for local.. just turn on the system and it'll log you in.

For remote desktop you can do similar, it's built into the client, just have it save whatever login credentials. Bring up the options and uncheck the "always ask for credentials" or check "allow me to save credentials" box, depending on the version and its current state. You can give it a username/password so next time you connect, it goes right through without asking unless you edit it again. That only applies to the remote connection, local you'll still need to log in unless disabled.

i am sorry if i was not clear in the previous posts.

here is the full situation:
i've many computers in my lad, all running windows 7 ultimate.
i log in using windows remotely desktop from the main machine to the other computers and not vice versa.
each time i try to log in to any of these computers from the main machine i am being asked to fill in a username and a password.
also each time these computers being rebooted or restarted also i am being asked to fill in username and password.
so in short all i need is remotely access without a password.
the point is that i am trying to let these computers be log in automatically as possibles.

Facebook shutting down facial recognition in the EU, gets stamp of approval from Ireland DPC

Earlier this year, Ireland's Data Protection Commissioner, a body whose decisions impact Facebook's policies in Europe at large, made several recommendations to bring the website in line with regional privacy laws, calling for greater transparency on how users' data is handled and more user control over settings, among other things. The DPC just officially announced that Zuckerberg et al. have for the most part adjusted its policies accordingly. The biggest change involves the facial recognition feature, which attempts to identify Facebook friends in photos and suggest their names for tagging. The social network turned off this functionality for new users in the EU -- and it will be shutting it down entirely by October 15th. It's not like Ireland, home to Facebook's European HQ, is the first to give the site flack about such features: Germany was having none of it when the site introduced facial recognition last summer.

Giants run over Panthers

Short-handed NY has no problem in surging to 36-7 victory

By AARON BEARD

updated 1:34 a.m. ET Sept. 21, 2012

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Eli Manning didn't need a fourth-quarter comeback Thursday night.

The two-time Super Bowl champion quarterback, running back Andre Brown and the rest of the New York Giants finished off the Carolina Panthers way before that.

Brown ran for a career-high 113 yards and two touchdowns in his first NFL start to help the Giants rout the Panthers 36-7.

Four days after rallying from 14 points down to beat Tampa Bay, the Giants dominated the first half, scoring on their first four possessions to build a 20-0 lead.

The defending champion Giants (2-1) were without three starters but it hardly mattered.

Brown ? waived by five different teams ? including the Panthers ? since coming into the league as a fourth-round draft pick in 2009 ? got his chance Thursday night when Ahmad Bradshaw sat out with a neck injury.

Brown said he thought about getting cut by the Panthers before the game ? and it inspired him.

"I was walking into the stadium and I have to go by the spot where I parked my car," Brown said. "I felt a little fire, no doubt. I'm so happy to come out here. It really humbled me. It really shows that everything is not guaranteed. You know, I'm just going to ride this wave. Hopefully, it's a long wave."

Ramses Barden is hoping to ride that same wave.

Barden caught nine passes for a career-high 138 yards in his first NFL start. He played in place of Hakeem Nicks.

Of course it helps that the guy throwing you the ball is named Manning. He completed 27 of 35 passes for 288 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.

On the other side, second-year quarterback Cam Newton struggled all night and was pressured into three interceptions. The Panthers (1-2) had five turnovers, including two by returner Joe Adams.

Newton had no luck running the read option against the Giants. He was held to 6 yards rushing a week after running for a career-high 71 yards against the Saints.

"We got some licks on him, when he kept the ball, and that's something that was lacking last week," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "You have to be disciplined. You have to have people in the right spots, or he'll take full advantage of it."

Panthers coach Ron Rivera likened the loss to a lesson you learn from your big brother.

"They came in and slapped us around and dragged us to the ground a little bit," Rivera said. "Hopefully, we learn from it a little bit. Hopefully, we learn from it and, hopefully, we don't like it and we come back focused."

Mixing run and pass, the Giants dominated the opening half, outgaining the Panthers 303-125.

Manning completed 19 of 25 passes for 208 yards in the first half, including a 14-yard touchdown pass to Martellus Bennett to cap the Giants' game-opening drive and set the tone. It capped an eight-play, 80-yard drive and marked the third straight game the Panthers have given up a touchdown on an opponent's first drive.

For Rivera and the Panthers the first half was a nightmare.

"When you put yourself in a hole like that it's tough trying to claw and scratch yourself back up," Rivera said. "And that's really what happened. That's the type of game they want you to be in. That's trouble. When you get behind they can cut those guys loose on the pass rush."

Brown repeatedly bounced off tacklers and Barden had little trouble getting open against a Carolina defense that failed to pressure Manning.

Brown ran 13 times for 71 yards and a touchdown last week against Tampa Bay and surpassed that total by the end of the first quarter with 77 yards on seven.

Barden had 123 yards on seven catches at halftime.

Before Thursday night, the fourth-year receiver had never managed more than nine catches for 94 yards receiving in a season.

"At this level, you never know when you're going to get an opportunity, you've got to be prepared for it," Manning said. "Andre Brown is a great example. He's a guy we drafted, he bounced around, and we brought him back. He was on the bubble to make the team, and here you go. Ahmad (Bradshaw) gets hurt, and he ran great, he pass-protected.

"He did get off to a bit of a shaky start. He went left when he was supposed to run right on the first play. We had a little talk and got him settled down, and after that, he did very, very well."

Any hopes that the Panthers would turn things around in the second half were slowed when rookie returner Adams fumbled trying to catch the opening kickoff, resulting in another field goal for Lawrence Tynes.

Tynes finished with five field goals on the night.

The Panthers didn't get on the board until midway through the third quarter when Newton leaped over the pile from a yard out.

Newton said it wasn't what the Giants did but what the Panthers didn't do.

"Who wants to supports something that puts on a performance of embarrassment out there, and that's what that was," Newton said. "If I was a fan of the Carolina Panthers I would be holding my head down in shame at the product that was out there."

Newton said the Panthers problem was execution, not anything the Giants did to stop them.

"We have to fix it," Newton said.

Notes: For the third straight week Carolina receiver Steve Smith sparred with an opposing cornerback during the game. This week's victim was Corey Webster. ... Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart missed his second game of the season because of a toe injury. The Panthers also were without tackle Byron Bell. ... Prosecutors end fight for Colorado shooting suspect?s notebook

James Holmes on Thursday (Sketch/Bill Robles)

[Updated at 4:00 p.m. ET]

CENTENNIAL, Colo.?Prosecutors on Thursday surrendered their battle for a notebook Colorado murder suspect James Holmes sent to his psychiatrist the day before he allegedly killed 12 and wounded 58 in an Aurora movie theater.

The notebook reportedly contains descriptions of a violent attack. Prosecutors considered it potential evidence, but Holmes' defense team had maintained it fell under doctor-client privilege.

But in court on Thursday, prosecutors justified their decision to give up the fight by saying that they'll likely get to see the notebook if Holmes pleads not guilty by reason of insanity. Continuing their push, they said, would only drag out the case.

Holmes allegedly mailed Dr. Lynne Fenton, a University of Colorado psychiatrist he had seen, a package the day before the July 20 shootings.

Holmes' jail mugshot (Arapahoe Co. Sheriff)

Holmes' defense team will now get to review and photograph the notebook, but only under court and police supervision.

Holmes was arrested two months ago behind an Aurora movie theater after the deadly rampage during a premiere showing of Batman "The Dark Knight Rises." The melee is among the worst mass shootings in modern-day American history.

The 24-year-old suspect was in court on Thursday, but appeared different than how he looked at the time of his arrest and initial hearings. The long, cartoonish red-orange hair is gone, and is now a closely cropped brown. Holmes seemed alert in court. He appeared to follow the conversation during the hour-long hearing, but he did not speak.

The Associated Press said Holmes appeared more animated during the hearing.

"He smiled and glanced around the courtroom, looking at his lawyers and reporters covering the hearing," an AP reporter wrote. "He appeared to be moving his mouth but not actually talking."

The judge on Thursday also approved the district attorney's request to tack on 10 additional charges of criminal intent to commit murder in the first degree. Names of the victims were redacted from the court filing, but prosecutors wrote, "the facts warrant the additional charges."

The former Ph.D neuroscience student now faces a total of 152 criminal complaints, including 24 counts of first-degree murder (dual charges include premeditated and without remorse).

Scientists uncover mechanism by which plants inherit epigenetic modifications

ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2012) ? During embryonic development in humans and other mammals, sperm and egg cells are essentially wiped clean of chemical modifications to DNA called epigenetic marks. They are then held in reserve to await fertilization.

In flowering plants the scenario is dramatically different. Germ cells don't even appear until the post-embryonic period -- sometimes not until many years later. When they do appear, only some epigenetic marks are wiped away; some remain, carried over from prior generations -- although until now little was known about how or to what extent.

"What we did know," says Professor and HHMI-GBMF Investigator Rob Martienssen, Ph.D., of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), "was that epigenetic inheritance -- the inheritance by offspring of chemical "tags" present in parental DNA that modify the expression of genes -- is much more widespread in plants than in animals."

In new research published online September 20 in the journal Cell, Martienssen and colleagues show that genome reprogramming through these epigenetic mechanisms is guided by small RNAs and is passed on to the next generation.

Some DNA is tagged with epigenetic marks

It has long been known that in plants, as the male germline pollen grains develop, they give rise to two sperm cells, and a structure called the vegetative nucleus, also known as the "nurse cell" because it provides energy and nourishment to the sperm cells.

The DNA in germ cells can exist in two dramatically different states: in one, it is very densely packed and essentially inaccessible to the cellular machinery that enables individual genes to be "expressed." In the other, in which the packing is much looser, genes can be expressed. In the latter state, because the genetic material is accessible, it is can also be modified by various chemical groups (two common ones are methyl and acetyl) which tend to attach to the DNA at specific locations.

These chemical tags are called epigenetic marks. The attachment of, for instance, a methyl group to a particular stretch of DNA containing a gene tends to prevent that gene from being accessed by the gene-expression machinery, and thus prevents the gene from being expressed.

Inherited methylation patterns are guided by small RNAs

Probing further into the set of modifications on the DNA in plant pollen grains, Martienssen and colleagues decided to look at the particular set of chemical marks called methyl groups. When they separated out pollen grains in different stages of development they found distinct patterns of the attachment of methyl groups to DNA.

They also noticed the corresponding accumulation of small RNAs, including two classes of so-called short-interfering RNAs (siRNAs) -- tiny RNA molecules, 21 or 24 nucleotides in length -- involved in silencing gene expression. These small siRNAs act as guides to where methylation will occur, silencing gene expression.

Previous work by the Martienssen lab and their collaborators, including a team of pollen specialists from the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciencia in Lisbon, Portugal, has shown that these epigenetic mechanisms are important for keeping transposons in check. Also known as "jumping genes" for their ability to be expressed and then re-insert themselves at random into a different area of the genome, transposons are dangerous because they can cause damage to DNA and disrupt genetic function.

In the current study, Martienssen's team discovered that while in sperm, some areas of DNA containing transposons had "lost" methyl groups, and thus had the potential to be expressed, the same stretches of DNA were observed to be methylated in the seed embryo. This was associated with the accumulation of 21 nucleotide long siRNA in the mature pollen and 24 nucelotide long siRNA in the seed embryo. Martienssen speculates that the loss of methylation in the sperm and subsequent re-methylation during fertilization may reflect an ancient mechanism for transposon recognition and silencing.

A second important observation made by the team was of the loss of methylation in "nurse cells." Methylation at these same sites is retained in the associated sperm cells, and, too, is associated with accumulation of 24 nucleotide siRNA. This process results in areas of recurrent epigenetic marking that are pre-methylated in the germline sperm and carried on to the next generation.

"This is what, at least in part, enables plants to inherit acquired traits from prior generations -- something that we mammals can rarely do," Martienssen observes.

Being able to trace the inheritance of traits -- both wanted and unwanted -- in plants, and notably in agricultural crops, is important for farmers. Martienssen predicts that "defining inheritance through epigenetic modifications will influence the ways people think about cross-breeding to select for desired traits." Such traits as resistance to temperature variation in crops have important agricultural and economic implications.
