What to Do in Philadelphia This Weekend: Jan. 25-27, 2013

With the weather forecast not likely to go above freezing, many people tend to bundle up and stay indoors. But there's so much more to life than hiding at home! For this weekend's events in Philadelphia, we focused on events in the city proper. Indoors or outdoors, free or not, here are a few ideas to entice you to step out and experience something different.

Center City District Restaurant Week

Ready for a three-course lunch or dinner on the cheap? Check out the list of participating restaurants offering lunch or dinner on a budget as part of Center City District Restaurant Week. You can make reservations for many of the restaurants through OpenTable. A limited number of restaurants are participating on Saturday, so be sure to verify which day(s) your favorite restaurant is participating. If the cost of parking is an impediment to going, know this: The Philadelphia Parking Association and Philadelphia Parking Authority are offering discounted parking at $9 or less at many lots and garages throughout Center City. Present a voucher from a participating restaurant between 5 p.m. and 1 a.m. at a parking facility with a Center City District Restaurant Week poster at their entrance to get the discount.

James Prozek: Ocean Fishes

This weekend is the last weekend that the James Prozek: Ocean Fishes exhibit will be displayed at the Academy of Natural Sciences. The exhibit displays Prozek's life-sized paintings from his latest book, "Ocean Fishes," including a 15-foot marlin. His paintings allow visitors to see aspects of marine life that are typically hidden from view. The exhibit is included with the cost of regular admission.

On a serious note, the Penn Museum will be displaying in the Trescher Entrance Lobby (first floor) the Morton Collection of skulls. This new exhibit just opened on Wednesday and is included in the cost of museum admission. The skulls were originally collected by physician Samuel Morton in an effort to confirm society's views on racial hierarchy and categorization of humans. If you just want to take a brief peek, during the last half-hour of each day, general admission is "pay what you want."

Helium Comedy Club: Brian Posehn

Are you ready to get your laughter going? Head on down to the Helium Club, where comedian Brian Posehn will try to tickle your funny bone. Besides his fame from "The Sarah Silverman Program," he has appeared in numerous sitcoms -- "Just Shoot Me," "Seinfeld," "Friends," and "Everybody Loves Raymond," to name a few. Tickets for Friday night are on the lower end of the range; Saturday night tickets are the higher end.
