Facebook launches suicide prevention feature

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)-

The world's top social networking has launched a new feature. It is designed to help prevent suicides.

?Last year in Alabama, 676 people committed suicide. Some of those suicides are a result of bullying, in particular, bullying on Facebook. This is why Facebook is partnering with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

Here's how it works. Let's say you see a post on a friend's wall that concerns you. If you really think their life was in danger, you would click on the "report/mark as spam" tab.? Then, you are given the option to ?undo' or ?report it as abusive.' From there, click ?report it' and select ?violent harmful behavior' and ?suicidal content.'? Facebook would then be alerted and a counselor with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline would begin a chat

Facebook realizes that some people may use this feature as a way to play a cruel joke. People who run the site say they will filter the suicide claims. The National Prevention of Suicide Lifeline tells me they know they will get fake notifications, but they say the cost far outweighs the negative.
